010.1.1Barrier cable systems are a cost effective, yet elegant solution to provide vehicular and pedestrian fall protection along the separation of parking garage ramps, flat slabs, and building perimeters. Barrier cables provide protection that enhances the look of the building. The typical system utilizes ½” seven-wire galvanized strand, in strengths up to 270K. Corrosion protection is typically based on zinc galvanized coating of the strand (ASTM Spec A-475 Class A) and either plated or galvanized hardware. As an automobile restraint, it is typically designed to withstand the load of a 5,000 pound vehicle traveling at 5 mph with no more than 18” of cable deflection (local building codes may differ). As pedestrian fall protection, the typical system utilizes the requirements of the UBC Building Code (42” high and 4” between cables). Each system is designed to accommodate the type and location of end anchors and intermediate supports as uniquely required for each project.
This system utilizes a combination of cable and fence fabric to provide both vehicular and pedestrian protection. There are normally three to five cables per run with the fence fabric attached directly to the cables. The top and bottom strands carry the weight of the fence fabric, thus allowing compliance with pedestrian code requirements. Additional strands are installed to accommodate the vehicular impact (as determined by applicable building codes and design requirements). A great option when irregular elevations in the deck may create openings too large to meet code. The typical system utilizes ½ ”seven-wire galvanized strand, with heavy nine-gauge black vinyl coated fence fabric attached to the cables.
For projects that require only pedestrian protection, framed fence barriers are a cost-effective alternative. The system utilizes wire fence materials framed in pipe and is custom fabricated to fit each opening. Each system can be designed to accommodate the applicable building codes and project requirements. The typical system utilizes heavy nine-gauge black vinyl coated fabric in heights of 42”, 72”, or 84”, with black annealed industrial pipe frame with matching clamps, caps, and components for securing the fence. Advantages include improved security as well as accommodating custom areas and shapes.
After years of use and weather exposure, garage barrier cables can sustain damage that range from a few loose cables, to an entire system that has fallen into disrepair, or one that no longer meets the current building code. Barrier Cable Constructors can work with building owners and design professionals to provide repair or replacement options.
There are instances when either traditional barrier cable or fence alternatives aren’t feasible or desirable, Barrier Cable Constructors can provide fabricated steel crash barriers to solve this problem.
